North Philadelphia’s Jill Scott will play an activist in a Lifetime movie about the Flint water crisis, the network announced Thursday.
The Grammy winner, who headlined HBO’s The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, will be starring with Queen Latifah, Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad, Life in Pieces), and Marin Ireland (Hell or High Water) in Flint, inspired by the Time magazine cover story, “The Toxic Tap,” about the lead-contaminated water in Flint, Mich.
According to Lifetime, the film, which begins production next week, will feature Scott, Brandt, and Ireland portraying real-life activists “who sought justice following the wrongdoing committed against the residents of the city who were unknowingly drinking and using lead-laden water.” Queen Latifah, who’s also an executive producer, will play a fourth Flint resident.
Also on the team: uber-producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Chicago) and TV newswoman Katie Couric.
